FatSecret has not paid to appear here and there is no affiliate link on this page. Every fact below was read off apps.apple.com, play.google.com, foods.fatsecret.com, platform.fatsecret.com, fatsecret.com on 7 October 2026. This is a documentary review of published information rather than a hands-on test, and it has not been clinically reviewed.
Ratings and review signals
The storefront score, its full sample size, and any unusually useful critical review. These are third-party signals, not our verdict.
FatSecret has operated since 2006 and claims 1.9 million verified foods on its consumer site. Barcode scanning and photo recognition both sit in the free app.
The full ledger
15 fields. Every one resolves to a value, a qualified answer, not offered, not disclosed, or not verified. None is left blank, and none is filled from a third party unless its note says so.
- Free tier
- Yes
Both store listings put the food diary, barcode scanner, image recognition, community, exercise diary, reporting and Apple Health or Fitbit sync in the base feature list, with Premium described separately. The App Store description states plainly that FatSecret is free. Neither store listing carries an ads badge.
- Barcode scanning
- free
Listed in the base feature list on both store listings, not in the Premium block.
- Data export
- PDF or CSV export on iOS and Android; tier not stated
The current official help page gives export steps for both platforms and lets users choose a date range, report detail, and PDF or CSV. It does not say whether Premium is required.
- Adaptive targets
- Not verified
No adaptive mechanism is named on fatsecret.com or either store listing, checked 28 August 2026. FatSecret makes no adaptive-target claim, but it also does not state that targets are fixed, so we are not recording this as not offered.
- Micronutrients
- Not disclosed
No micronutrient count appears on fatsecret.com or either store listing. The closest published statement is that the web food diary lets you select up to six columns of nutritional information.
- Price per month
- $14.99
From the App Store purchase named Monthly Subscription. Lower legacy or regional entries at $10.49 also appear. FatSecret publishes no pricing page on its own site: fatsecret.com/premium returned an HTTP 403 on 28 August 2026.
- Price per year
- $59.99
From the App Store purchase named Annual Subscription. Further entries at $38.99 annual and $28.99, $19.99 and $20.00 quarterly also appear, unlabeled. Google Play states an aggregate range of $14.99 to $59.99 per item.
- Claimed database size
- 1.9 million verified foods on the consumer site, 2.3 million on the developer platform
Both are the vendor's own claims and they conflict. The API site adds claims of 100 percent verified items, zero duplicates, 90 percent or better barcode coverage and 58 or more verified country datasets, while the consumer FAQ documents a path for members to add missing foods to the same database.
- Macro tracking
- Yes
Both store listings describe detailed reporting and goals for calories and macros. Free-tier macro limits are not stated.
- Recipe import
- Not verified
Checked the App Store listing, the Play listing and the FAQ on 28 August 2026. The FAQ covers submitting recipes to the FatSecret kitchen, not importing one from a URL. No import feature is described either way.
- Photo logging
- free
Both store listings put image recognition of foods, meals and products in the base feature list rather than the Premium block. No product name is given for the feature.
- Platforms
- iOS, Android, Web, watchOS
The App Store lists iPadOS and visionOS as well. Google Play shows 50 million or more downloads and device filters covering phone, Chromebook and tablet. Wear OS is not claimed on either listing.
- Device syncing
- Apple Health, Apple Watch, Fitbit, Google Fit, Samsung Health
Named on the store listings, with Apple Health syncing in both directions and Apple Watch complications on iOS. Garmin, Oura, Withings, Strava and CGM devices are not named on any page we checked.
- Founded
- 2006
Stated on the developer platform about page. The consumer about page says over 18 years, which is consistent.
- Ownership
- Secret Industries Pty Ltd, Caulfield North, Victoria, Australia
The operating entity named as developer of record on both stores, with the Australian address published in the Play developer block. No parent company or ownership statement appears on either about page, so independence is not disclosed.
Where FatSecret contradicts itself

Whether anything costs money

- Free forever
- Consumer FAQ, fatsecret.com, still promising every feature is free and always will be
Best current answer: The core app is free, and a paid Premium subscription exists
The App Store listing governs the current transaction and publishes a $14.99 monthly purchase. The broader “free forever” FAQ cannot reasonably mean that no paid tier exists.
How big the food database is
FatSecretMarketing claim2 published answers
Still unresolved — here is how to use it
The consumer and developer products may use different scopes. Neither unaudited count predicts logging accuracy, so this should not drive a choice.
The verdict
FatSecret suits people who want free barcode and photo logging. Its official help documents PDF and CSV food-diary export on iOS and Android, but does not say whether export requires Premium; micronutrient target detail also remains unpublished.
Best for: Logging food, scanning barcodes and using photo recognition without ever paying.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
FatSecret's live consumer FAQ still promises that all features on the site are free and will always remain free, while the App Store sells Premium at $14.99 a month, which makes the company's public disclosure stale and hard to trust. Its two properties also disagree with each other on database size, 1.9 million versus 2.3 million, and the developer platform advertises a fully verified database with zero duplicates while the consumer FAQ invites members to add their own foods to it.
What was sourced
Every cell in the ledger above marked as a value or as a qualified answer was read off one of the 7 pages listed under sources, on . This confirms that the vendor published the claim; it does not independently prove the claim true. Nothing was taken from a review aggregator, an affiliate roundup or a third-party blog.
Nobody on this team installed FatSecret, subscribed to it, logged a meal in it or contacted it. What is above is what the company is willing to put in writing on its own properties, which is a narrower claim than whether the app works well.
What was not verified
7 things could not be confirmed from a primary source. They are listed here rather than filled with a plausible value. If you have first-hand information on any of them, the corrections address is in the footer.

- Major
- FatSecret's existing version 11.8.2 review signal now includes a fifth recent one-star report, published September 7, describing very slow food entry and repeated failed searches before a food appeared. - Major
- FatSecret's review signal now records several recent one-star reports through September 4 that version 11.8.2 stopped returning products in search or barcode lookup. This is a small review pattern, not a representative sample; no developer response appears in the current storefront feed.FatSecret US App Store reviews
- Minor
- Updated FatSecret's review signal from one food-entry complaint to a three-review pattern after recent version 11.8.2 reviewers reported that product search or barcode lookup no longer returned results. - Minor
- Added a one-review signal describing a regression in the updated food-entry flow: the reviewer said each item now requires a separate search instead of selecting several results together.FatSecret US App Store reviews

- FatSecret data export moved from not verified to conditional after its official help page became readable. The page documents iOS and Android export in PDF or CSV but does not state whether a paid tier is required.FatSecret export and print help

- Added the US App Store snapshot: 4.75 out of 5 from 14,864 ratings. This is a storefront fact, not a directory score.US App Store listing
- Minor
- FatSecret data export, recipe import and adaptive targets recorded as not verified rather than as absent. The relevant vendor help pages sit behind a challenge page that blocked direct reading, and a fact that could not be read is not a fact that is missing.
